Saint Catherine Monastery
St. Catherine's Monastery is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world. It plays an important role in history, religion, and architecture. It is situated on the Peninsula of Sinai, not very far from the city of St. Katherine, which lies about 200 km from Sharm El Sheikh. It was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian I around the site where, according to tradition, Moses met the burning bush.
The complex does have some of the most impressive Byzantine architecture, with its high walls, large interior courtyards, and distinct church, aesthetically decked out with mosaics.
Church of Saint Catherine: It is the central church of the monastery, and it shows icons and one of the most famous mosaics, the Transfiguration of Christ, from the 6th century.
Saint Catherine's Monastery shelters one of the oldest and most important collections of Christian manuscripts worldwide, taking second place only to the Vatican. The library shows texts in different languages, including Greek, Arabic, and Syriac.
Mount Sinai: Many visitors combine a visit to the monastery with a hike up Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments. Great vistas greet hikers, including spiritual experience.
