Kalabsha Temple and Nubian Museum Day Tour

Your guide will pick you up from your Nile cruise or hotel in Aswan and transfer you to the Kalabsha temple. In the time between 1960 and 1970, when building the High Dam, many ancient temples had to be transferred to an island near Aswan. The Kalabsha temple is the most important of those monuments; it is dedicated to the Nubian god Mandaulis. Originally situated 50 km south of Aswan, it was built around 30 BC during the early Roman period on the site of an even older temple. From here, you will be airlifted to the Island of Philae to see the stunning temple of the Goddess Isis. The history of this temple complex is very rich, starting with the times of the Pharaohs up to the Romans. You will approach the temple by motorboat and have lunch at a local restaurant.

Next, you will visit the Nubian Museum, which points out the history, art, and culture of Nubian civilization. The museum was established in 1997 in cooperation with UNESCO and is the only reminder of what had been submerged beneath Lake Nasser. It contains artifacts that date from the prehistoric Kingdom of Kush to the time of Meroe; the displays in Coptic and Islamic art give an insight into the whole UNESCO project that moved Nubia's most important historical monuments due to the rising waters of Lake Nasser when building the Aswan High Dam. In the end, you'll be taken back to your accommodation in Aswan.
